Elaine Hey ~ Candidate for Northowram and Shelf May 2018
My name is Elaine Hey and I am the Green Party candidate for Northowram and Shelf Ward. I have lived in Northowram for 18 years with my family and I am self employed in the area. I love my local area, particularly the beautiful green spaces which I am committed to maintaining and protecting and I strongly believe in creating more accessible green spaces in more urban areas within Calderdale.
I firmly believe that it is now time for Calderdale to elect its first Green councillor to bring a Green perspective to decision making and a fresh way of looking at local issues. I have been a Green Party member for 4 years and I passionately believe in the Green agenda for both environmental and social justice.
I am passionate about the environment and believe that environmental protection needs to be at the heart of all policy on a local, national and global level. If elected as a councillor for Northowram and Shelf Ward my priorities would be to:-
• Work hard to promote local initiatives to help combat climate change
• Fight to ensure that development in our area is appropriate and sustainable and does not impact on important wildlife habitats and biodiversity in general
• Prioritise an efficient, affordable and accessible public transport system
• Help to grow the local green economy through helping and supporting local businesses
• Improving the local recycling rate through incentives and/or penalties to ensure that everyone plays their part
I am a member of the Electoral Reform Society and a supporter of Make Votes Matter and I actively campaign for a change to our undemocratic and outdated voting system in which seats do not match votes. The need for change is highlighted well in Northowram and Shelf Ward where the 40%+ of voters who do not vote Conservative find themselves without representation on the council time and time again.
I am the Yorkshire and Humber representative for GAP – Greens for Animal Protection and an active campaigner on animal issues such as ending the unscientific and cruel badger cull and protecting and strengthening the Hunting Act.
