Barry Crossland

Barry Crosland

I started work in 1954, managed a small department at 22 and, after 8 years in the chemical industry, I moved into teaching. I had progressed to M. Phil. Chemistry on a completely part-time basis and it was tough. I taught for 24 years at Calderdale College, ending up in middle management. I obtained an M.Sc. in Computing and a Teacher's Certificate by full-time study.

In 2003, I set up a small business and still run it, making me one of the oldest workers. I married a teacher and we encouraged our two daughters to become well educated. One is a GP and the other is a teacher, and both are very caring. Now the two eldest grandchildren are at university and doing well.

I was married for 46 years until my wife died, by far the worst experience of my life. However, I ‘hit the jackpot’ again and remarried two years ago.

I am concerned that Elland town centre is dying because there has been no investment or encouragement for businesses to establish themselves in Elland.

The loss of the well-used swimming pool and the lack of a replacement was bad for morale. We lost four banks with no effort by Calderdale Council to retain one. So people have to travel from Elland for basic services but the bus services are dreadful. So people desert the buses to use their cars and the bus service deteriorates. Elland is scruffy and litter is an appalling problem.

A new leisure centre and pool is planned for Halifax. I think amenities should be distributed to reduce the need to travel. Elland tax and rate payers contribute to the Exchequer and Calderdale MBC but nothing comes back to Elland.

If elected I will be fighting for the people and town of Elland.
