The Local Plan is a Council-led proposal to build more than 10,000 new homes in Calderdale. The Plan, ordered by the Conservative Government, will trigger the building of nearly 1,000 new houses in Northowram and Shelf.
Martin has been at the forefront of the fight against the Plan, highlighting its massive impact on the environment, traffic levels, air quality and local services. He spoke against the development at the Official Hearings in 2021, and has made multiple written objections.
Martin says:
The massive scale of opposition to the Plan has led to big delays, with approval now at least two years late compared to original expectations. Even so, the council has resisted making any significant changes to the Plan; so the fight will need to continue.
I expect a vote on the Plan by Councillors to take place within months — having a Green Party Councillor in these debates will make a massive difference. I’d ask everyone use their vote in May.
