Shelf Residents Ask for School Traffic Action

7 October 2021

Strong support has emerged for a ‘School Streets’ scheme around St Michael’s Primary School.

Helped by local resident Rob Pringle and the Green Party team, Martin Hey has been canvassing residents’ views regarding the school traffic on the Greenacres Estate in Shelf.

Feedback from 85 residents showed that:

Graph showing support, opposition and ‘Don’t know’
  • 69% of residents would support the introduction of a ‘School Streets’ initiative (where school traffic is restricted at drop-off and pick-up times) either on a trial or permanent basis;
  • 71% of residents saw queuing traffic as a significant problem on the estate and neighbouring Brow Lane, with 65% personally affected on school days;
  • 37 people said they struggled to leave or return to their house at times, whilst 31 said that pollution was a real problem.

Martin commented:

“We had a great response on the doorsteps. Everyone on the estate wants to improve the situation for residents and children alike, and we’ve had lots of really creative suggestions. We’ll look to engage the Council and start improving the situation in and around the school.”
