There is a Calderdale Green Party meeting on the draft Calderdale Local Plan in The Town Hall, Hebden Bridge, 7.30pm Tuesday 19th Sept.

Post election social: Friday, 16 June 2017

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard for us in the General Election. Though the Green Party suffered from tactical voting in the General Election, our supporters came out in support of Angharad Turner and Barry Crossland in the local council elections.

Hustings Tuesday, 2 May 2017

We have been pursuing a twin track approach to the snap General Election. On the one hand, we are taking forward the decision made in February to seek a progressive alliance based on a commitment to PR; on the other, we are selecting candidates for both the Calder Valley and the Halifax constituencies in case such an alliance does not materialise.

The hustings for these candidates will take place at 7.30 pm on Tuesday, 2 May 2017 at The Wharf Cafe Bar, Wharf Street, Sowerby Bridge HX6 2LA.

This is a members only meeting.

#Let Calderdale Breathe - Calderdale Air Pollution public discussion,
7.30pm, Tuesday 7th March, Hipperholme

All are welcome to a public discussion with local people and Calderdale Council’s Senior Environmental Health Officer, Ryan Carroll, at Christ Church, Leeds Road, Hipperholme HX3 8AA.  Ryan Carroll sends apologies and is unable to come to the meeting.
#LetCalderdaleBreath
We need to cut air pollution in Calderdale. In seven areas, called Air Quality Management Areas,  traffic-caused air pollution exceeds legal limits for Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Particulate Matter (PMn).

Biomass/Wood burning and incinerators are also becoming an air pollution issue.

Government rulings mean local planning policies relating to air quality have essentially been set aside, leaving only Policy EP1 Protection of Air Quality.

Calderdale Council is preparing its air quality strategy and action plan.  It’s vital that it includes practical measures to improve air quality in Brighouse, Copley Valley at Salterhebble and Bolton Brow, Hebden Bridge, Hipperholme, Luddenden Foot, Sowerby Bridge and Stump Cross, Halifax.

All are welcome to discuss how bad the problem is and practical ways of solving it.

We are trying to get an idea of people's views on air pollution in Calderdale. To help us, please complete the following brief survey.

Here is an A5 flyer to print and display in your window or anywhere else where people will see it.

Public Meeting ~ Energy efficient building: Passivhaus and other ideas

7:30 Todmorden Town Hall

Cllr Andrew Cooper: Coordinator of the Commission for Energy, Climate Change and the Environment of the EU Council of the Regions
Sophie Godfrey: CAD Technician and Associate, Straw Works, Todmorden.
Energy efficiency is a key to reducing carbon emissions, both globally and for the individual consumer who benefits from reduced energy costs. Among suggestions for achieving this are the German Passivhaus concept and the use of strawbales in buildings. Among the many advantages of strawbales are lower cost, greater energy efficiency, less susceptibility to fire and more rapid recovery from flooding.
Cllr Andrew Cooper has been involved in developing the Green Party’s ideas around the Passivhaus concept while Sophia Godfrey is an Associate of local company StrawWorks, a leading consultancy in energy efficient building.

NHS Reinstatement Bill Public Meeting

There is a Public Meeting on why we urgently need the NHS Reinstatement Bill at 7.30pm on Tuesday 2nd Feb, at Nutclough Studio, Keighley Road, Hebden Bridge

All are welcome to attend the meeting, which Calderdale Green Party is hosting.

The NHS Reinstatement Bill is a cross-party private members’ bill that is due for its second reading in the House of Commons on Friday 11 March 2016.

It is urgently needed in order to stop and reverse the tsunami of NHS cuts and sell offs that are on track to demolish the NHS by the end of this Parliament.

Its call for a restoration of the NHS as a fully publicly owned, publicly funded and publicly run health service has the implicit support of 88% of the adult population in the country, as shown by a 2013 YouGov survey of public attitudes to nationalised public services

We need to make that support explicit and make MPs aware that regardless of their party politics, they need to represent and carry out the wishes of the public in this respect. Even 77% of Tory voters and supporters want the NHS to be publicly owned, run and funded.

The 2012 Health and Social Care Act effectively abolished the NHS and we are now seeing the effects of that abolition. Under instructions from the unaccountable, stealth-privatisation quangos NHS England and Monitor, Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS commissioners now propose to:

  • Knock down Huddersfield Royal Infirmary
  • Sell off the land to developers (who owns it and what will they do with the money?)
  • Replace the 400+ bed Huddersfield District General Hospital (complete with a full A&E), with a new 119-bed planned care clinic on Acre Mill across the road. It will also have an outpatients department, therapies, day case beds and an urgent care centre for minor illnesses and accidents
  • Crowd all acute and Emergency care into Calderdale Royal Hospital.
  • Move a whole slew of hospital services into an ill-defined “community” service called Care Closer to Home. This will include end of life/palliative care and many services that care for chronic illnesses, such as musculo-skeletal problems, heart and respiratory illnesses, diabetes, and children’s complex health conditions.

The Clinical Senate – a body of doctors set up by the Health & Social Care Act 2012 – has reviewed the proposals and says their lack of clarity means it’s impossible to say whether they will deliver care to the required standards.

So it’s hardly surprising that the NHS Commissioners’ Pre Consultation Business Case for the proposals notes that Care Closer to Home will meet  with:

“resistance and refusal to change in primary care”.

Care Closer to Home will create ‘primary care lite’ – based on American private health insurance company models, like United Health’s. This will degrade GP practices even further than government funding cuts and senseless tick boxing exercises already have.

We need to fight these proposals and we also need to call for a restoration of the NHS as a comprehensive, universal health service that is free at the point of need, that the Secretary of State has a duty to provide, and that is fully publicly owned, run and funded. This is ultimately the only way to stop these ubiquitous attempts at dismantling the NHS

The meeting will have a practical focus:

  • What do we need to do to stop the Right Care Right Place Right Time proposals from going ahead?
  • Who is going to do it, how and when?
  • What do we need to do to reach the 88% of the public who want a fully publicly owned, run and managed NHS, and encourage them to support the NHS Reinstatement Bill?
  • And to urge our MPs to vote for it on 11 March?
  • And who is going to do these things, how and when?
